Weight Management

Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder among children and adolescents in the United States. Approximately 21-24% of American children and adolescents are overweight, and 16-18% are obese. Certain ethnicities have higher rates.

Our doctor and nurse practitioner here at Maumee Bay pediatrics take a proactive and multi-faceted approach to solving this problem before it causes complications such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and kidney disease as well as reproductive problems. Many factors, including genetics, environment, metabolism, lifestyle, and eating habits, are believed to play a role in the development of obesity.

With over 30 years combined experience, our health practitioners take a multi-dimensional approach to stabilize and reverse this disease. We use the resources provided and created by the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) for treatment, goal setting, and evidence-based programs for success. We use the My Plate program created by the CDC to allow an interactive approach to help children and families be successful.

We provide educational handouts, food diaries, and information for parents to take home after each appointment which assists in goal setting and helps them to retain the information and be successful. We connect our patients and families with community based programs, dietitians, nutritionists, counselors when needed – work in collaboration with allied health providers to provide comprehensive care for our patients and families.
