Anxiety/Depression

At Maumee Bay Pediatrics, we know how hard it is for parents when they think their child may be suffering from anxiety or depression. The signs may be subtle or completely different from what an adult experiences. Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by persistent, excessive, and unrealistic worry about everyday things.. In children, this may manifest itself as worrying about school performance or about natural disasters. In face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the fears a child may have are likely higher than normal due to their unusual home situation and inability to interact with schoolmates and friends. Anxiety will often coexist with depression. Difficulty sleeping or eating and angry outbursts may be a few signs of depression in children.
Children with GAD may have difficulties concentrating and participating in various activities. Their social relationships may suffer due to the need for frequent reassurance. Sometimes, children with anxiety are perfectionists and overly self-critical. We offer the help and solutions you seek. GAD is a medical condition, just like diabetes, and can have serious health consequences if left untreated.
Our compassionate, advanced pediatric nurse practitioner at Maumee Bay Pediatrics, Carrie Baker, has a specialty in pediatrics. She has the most up to date knowledge to understand your child’s anxiety and depression as well as how to manage it with a variety of tools. Carrie has over 10 years of experience dealing with all types of mood disorders and other pediatric medical conditions.
Our healthcare professionals use the approved (by American Academy of Pediatrics -AAP and American Academy of Psychiatry-APA ) SCARED and CES-DC tests for evaluation and diagnosis. They provide individualized treatment tailored to your child’s specific needs.
They also have a wide array of community resources to connect you with community-based programs, counselors, and psychologists that can offer Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is just a fancy term for talking through the child’s thought process and offering alternative solutions to replace the anxious feelings. Maumee Bay Pediatrics works in collaboration with all healthcare professionals and specialists to provide the most comprehensive evidence-based medicine in the region.
Your child is not alone. As of 2019, there are 4.4 million children (ages 3-17) with anxiety and 1.9 million with depression (CDC).
